Sunday Funday: Apple dumplings and sauce!

What a day! It was full of baking, and our house smelled amazing ALL day!! Liam wanted applesauce, so we began our morning making it. He was the best little helper. He became a pro at peeling the apples. Haha. He said his favorite part was mashing up the apples! 🙂

After that I made about 40 apple dumplings!! They turned out AMAZING! Here is my recipe.

Preheat oven to 350. Peel, core, and cut apples in half.

DOUGH:

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cups very cold water

FILLING:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 TBSP cinnamon

SYRUP:

  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 cups extremely hot water

Put all dough ingredients in bowl and mix/kneed by hand. Roll out as thin as you’d like. The less crust you want the, thinner you will roll it and vice versa. I don’t roll out all at once. I roll each dumpling crust separate.

After rolling out, place half an apple, cut side down, in the center of the dough. You want the rounded part facing up. Sprinkle with as much cinnamon and sugar filling as desired. I usually use about 1/2 TBSP. Then fold dough around apple, and place seam side up in baking dish. Once dish is filled with dumplings, pour the syrup over the dumplings. You don’t want too much syrup, just enough that it covers the bottom. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes or until golden brown. I check mine a few times and use a food brush to brush on more syrup to keep the tops from drying out.

You can refrigerate them or leave at room temperature. If leaving at room temperature, be sure to eat within 2-3 days or they will start to get moldy.

*We like to nuke ours for about 20 seconds and eat with a scoop of vanilla ice cream: 🙂
